High Contrast Makeup Tutorial: Step-by-Step Guide
Welcome back to the Subtl blog! Today, we’re diving into a high contrast makeup tutorial—a look that’s perfect for anyone whose features naturally stand out with striking contrasts. If you’re unsure of your contrast level or what this even means, don’t worry, I’ll explain everything!
What Does "High Contrast" Mean?
Your contrast level is determined by the difference between the lightness and darkness of your features. For example, high contrast individuals typically have light skin paired with dark, bold features such as dark hair, brows, and eyes. Examples of high contrast celebrities include Zooey Deschanel and Anne Hathaway. However, you can also have light eyes and still be high contrast, like Zooey!
If you’ve tried rocking minimalist makeup trends, like the “no-makeup” look or pale neutral shades, but felt washed out, it’s likely because you’re applying low contrast makeup to a high contrast face. When you embrace your contrast level, the right makeup can completely transform your look. For high contrast makeup, it’s all about balance, intensity, and choosing the right lip color. Ready to dive in? Let’s go!
Step 1: Create a Flawless Base
To start, I’m using the NARS Light Reflecting Foundation for a smooth, even base. Normally, I prefer just using Subtl’s Cream Concealer (it’s so versatile!), but since I’m currently dealing with acne and hyperpigmentation—thank you, pregnancy hormones—I’m opting for a fuller foundation look today.
If you’re a busy person like me (mom of soon-to-be two over here!), Subtl products are amazing because they’re designed for real life. On days when I’m short on time, just grabbing my Subtl Stak is all I need to create a polished look.
Next, I’m applying Cream Concealer in shades 004N and 003N. I love mixing these two shades for the perfect match. The creamy formula blends beautifully and covers any blemishes that peek through after foundation. If you’re just using concealer, these shades can totally stand on their own for a natural, skin-like finish.
Step 2: Add Warmth with Bronzer
High contrast makeup is all about balance, and bronzer plays a huge role in warming up the face. I’m using the Cream Concealer in shade 015C as a bronzer and applying it somewhat messily. Start on the cheeks, then sweep some across the nose, chin, and forehead—wherever the sun naturally hits. To blend, I’m using a damp beauty blender The result? A subtle, radiant glow that enhances the natural structure of your face.
Step 3: Define Those Brows
Dark, defined brows are a signature feature for high contrast individuals, so don’t skip this step! I’m using the Subtl Brow BFF in Medium Brown to fill in my brows. Start with light strokes to mimic hair, then finish with the gel side to tame and shape your brows. Whether you prefer fluffy or sleek brows, this tool does it all. A good brow makes such a difference in framing your face, especially for high contrast looks.
Step 4: Add Color to Your Cheeks and Lips
For high contrast makeup, bold lip and cheek colors are your best friends. I’m using Bordeaux On-the-Go Lip & Cheek, a rich, burgundy shade, as both blush and lip color. On the cheeks, apply it to the upper cheekbones and blend outward in circular motions for a natural flush. For lips, use a brush for precise application, and clean up the edges with concealer for a polished finish.
To add even more depth, I’m layering Guava Getaway Lip & Cheek as a lip liner and cheek accent. Don’t be afraid to experiment with layering—it’s the perfect way to create a cohesive look that ties your lips and cheeks together.
Step 5: Eyes That Pop
For the eyes, I’m starting with the Flight Eyeshadow Duo, focusing on the burgundy shade. I’m applying it close to the lash line and blending it out for a smoky effect. To add some shimmer, I’m using the bronze shade from the Staycation Duo on my lids. Pro tip: Apply shimmer with your fingers for maximum pigment and staying power.
To define the eyes further, I’m using the dark shade from the Dune Duo as a faux liner. Just press it along the lash line with an angled brush, and don’t forget to smudge a little underneath the eyes for added drama. Finish the eyes with a few coats of mascara.
Final Thoughts
And there you have it: a complete high contrast makeup look! While this look might be a bit bold for my medium contrast features, it’s perfect for anyone with high contrast—or even as a dramatic option for a night out.
If you’re still figuring out your contrast level, play around with different makeup styles and see what feels right. This concept has been a total game changer for me, and I hope it helps you feel more confident in your makeup choices too.
