Top Concealer Mistakes (and How to Fix Them!)
Hey friends! It’s Keira here—welcome back to the Subtl blog! Today, we’re diving into one of my favorite topics: concealer—specifically, the mistakes many of us are making and how to fix them for a flawless, natural finish.
Over the past year, I’ve seriously stepped up my concealer game, and a big reason for that is the Subtl Beauty Cream Concealer. It’s truly been a game-changer. Some of the tips I’m sharing today are tricks I’ve picked up from amazing makeup artists on TikTok, and some are things I’ve learned the hard way (trial, error, and all that good stuff). Let’s get into it!
1. Not Prepping Your Skin First
A smooth concealer application starts with your skin. And that doesn’t just mean slapping on some moisturizer five seconds before applying makeup. A few tips that have made a huge difference for me:
-
Hydration is key – Drink water! Your skin shows what's going on internally.
-
Sleep on a silk pillowcase – It reduces friction and is gentler on your skin.
-
Skincare layering – When applying your skincare (especially at night), avoid letting products sit too long between steps. Lock that moisture in!
-
Morning routine tip – After applying moisturizer and SPF, let it sit for at least 15 minutes before applying makeup. Otherwise, your concealer might slide right off.
2. Using the Wrong Type of Concealer
I used to reach for liquid or traditional concealers and wonder why everything looked patchy. The switch to a cream concealer was life-changing.
Cream concealers (like Subtl's!) are blendable, hydrating, and buildable. You don’t need to cover your whole face with foundation—just spot conceal where needed. Shade matching is also super important, and Subtl has a shade match quiz on their site to help you find your perfect match. Plus, returns are easy if it’s not quite right.
3. Going Too Light Under the Eyes
If you grew up during the 2016 makeup era (hello fellow millennials), you probably remember that big, bright triangle under the eyes. The idea was to brighten the area, but in reality? It usually just looked cakey.
Instead, I’ve found that using a concealer that matches my skin tone—or is even slightly darker—under my eyes gives a way more natural finish. If you do want to brighten, just pop a lighter shade into the inner corners of your eyes.
4. Incorrect Spot Concealing
Let’s talk blemishes. Here are a few tips to conceal them effectively:
-
Use your fingers – Especially for active acne. Brushes can spread bacteria (and acne).
-
Stamp, don’t smear – Dab concealer directly on the spot and let it sit (this helps it "bake" and stay put).
-
Don’t over-blend – Gently tap around the edges without touching the center.
My go-to method? Apply a bit with a clean finger, let it sit, and then softly pat the edges out. Finish with a bit of shine control powder to set it.
5. Skipping the Eyelid Area
This one’s personal: I have a lot of visible veins on my eyelids, so I use concealer to even them out before applying eyeshadow. It makes a huge difference and helps your eyeshadow last longer. Again, top with shine control powder for staying power.
6. Applying Too Much Product Too Quickly
A little goes a long way! With a buildable cream concealer like Subtl’s, it’s better to start with a light layer and add more if needed. This helps avoid cakiness and keeps everything looking fresh all day.
After I finish my makeup, I often go back in with a finger and gently pat a little more concealer under my eyes or on blemishes. The key is layering slowly and being gentle.
7. Only Concealing Under-Eyes (and Drawing More Attention There)
Just applying concealer under your eyes can actually emphasize that area. Instead, I like to bring the concealer down the sides of my nose, blending out into a soft triangle shape. It gives a much more balanced and natural look.
Bonus Tip: Touch-Ups Are Totally Okay
Let’s be real—makeup melts, especially if you live in a hot climate (I do!). Instead of stressing, I carry my Subtl Stack with me. It’s compact, easy to throw in a purse or car, and perfect for quick touch-ups on the go. Your makeup doesn’t need to be perfect all day—touching up when you're in better lighting (hello, car mirror!) is so helpful.
That’s a Wrap!
Thanks so much for hanging out with me and going through these concealer tips and tricks. Whether you’re a beginner or a makeup lover looking to level up, I hope this post helped you avoid some of the mistakes I’ve made in the past.
